Students are responsible to purchase and bring their own materials, you can also purchase an armature and clay through Dogtown. If you have any questions about materials or to order an armature or water clay, contact paul@dogtownsculptors.org.
Sculpture stands and oil clay warmers (turkey ovens, microwave) are provided for use at the studio
Armature: Bring a half life-size armature attached to a base, iron wire, aluminum wire, iron sticks 6 and 8mm. Please check back for more details on the armature size range and if it needs to be adjustable should we choose a seated pose. Also the specifics on the diameter and/or lengths of wire and iron sticks. Once these details are known, we’ll e-mail all enrolled students.
Clay: Bring 20 lbs of water or oil-based clay that you’re familiar with and like to use. For ease of use, Soldate 60 is recommended for beginners. WED is a popular water clay at Dogtown. Best place to buy water clay is Clay People in Richmond. Avoid buying water clay at chain art stores (e.g. Blick) that is often old/dry/hard (unusable). You can also order any water clay available from Clay People at cost through Paul (paul@dogtownsculptors.org) and will be ready for you at the studio.
Miscellaneous: Bring a sketch/note book and pen or pencil to draw and take notes. If using water clay, bring a spray bottle (for water), old white cotton T shirt, thin plastic bags (e.g. dry cleaning bags), and one large thick garbage bag to cover and keep your piece moist and in working condition. Also bring a 6 inch bar clamp or similar to secure your armature to the sculpture stand.

Tools: The best sculpture tools are your hands and fingers. Bring and use tools that you like. Best place to buy tools is Douglas and Sturgess in Richmond (and SF) or online from The Compleat Sculptor. Clay People in Richmond also has some limited tools. Some nice modeling tools are available from Reutter Tools or Tiranti. Examples of tools:
