Instructor/artist: Grzegorz Gwiazda studied at Polish and Italian academies, earning a doctorate in 2014, his mentors include Jan Kucz and Adam Myjak, legends of Polish sculpture. He teaches at universities in Poland and Spain and workshops around the world. His work often emphasizes the paradox and exchange of
contradictory energies (figuration-abstraction, classicism-modernity, strength-weakness) and explores the human condition and mortal limits while pushing the boundaries of artistic language to reach the viewer’s emotions. Each sculpture is a separate reality that reflects his longing for meaning.

Workshop Description: Students will sculpt from the live model in relation to an object or base (e.g. skull, chair, cloth). The goal for students is not to copy but interpret the relationship, express their perspective and create a narrative. The workshop will begin with a lecture followed by a drawing session to understand the main proportions and find a composition for the eventual sculpture. Over the course of the workshop, we’ll aim to understand the sculptural language, learn how to express our ideas in clay, and organize the piece in a meaningful composition. The class structure includes some lectures, demos, and one on one instruction.

Materials: Students are responsible to bring their own clay (oil or water based), armature (1/2 life size scale), sculpture tools, and other miscellaneous supplies. Full details on materials here.

Workshop payment: Workshop cost ($975 non-members) includes instruction and model fees only, students are responsible for materials. Contact paul@dogtownsculptors.org to pay (indicate your payment method: paypal, venmo, or check, so we can provide details on how to pay), and if you have any questions about the class. Credit card payments may be possible. All payments are non-refundable unless the workshop is cancelled (e.g. new pandemic, force majeure, under-enrollment). If you need to drop the class, we may be able to provide a refund if there’s a student from the waiting list to replace you.
