Instructor: Alicia N. Ponzio studied sculpture at the Florence Academy of Art and has taught at Florence, Lyme Academy of Fine Arts, SF Academy of Art, her own San Francisco studio, and given numerous workshops around the world. She’s received several notable commissions as well as awards and recognition from the Portrait Society of America, National Sculpture Society, and others.
Class Overview: This class is designed for students who want to learn how to model the draped (clothed) figure in clay and consists of lectures, demos, and individual critiques. The class is open to intermediate to advanced students who have some experience and familiarity with sculpting the human figure from life.
Classes 1-5: The first 5 classes will focus on modeling the nude figure from life to establish a strong block-in of the underlying nude figure.
Classes 6-10: The last 5 classes will focus on designing and modeling the drapery/clothing overhanging the nude figure and combining these two fundamental elements into a united sculpture.
Materials: Students are responsible to acquire and bring their own materials needed for the class (armature, clay, & tools). Materials are not covered by the class fee.
Armatures may be purchased from Alicia’s web-store (password protected for Dogtown class students). Paul will notify enrolled students when the armatures are available for purchase and provide instructions and password at that time. The armatures will be delivered by Alicia on the first day of class. Students may choose to make their own armatures, but they must be the same scale (24 inches) and the board should be sealed with oil paint or a waterproof sealant. Contact paul@dogtownsculptors.org to get a pdf guide with images and notes on building your own figure armature.
Water Clay – 25 lbs, use a water clay body you know and like that is well suited for modeling. If you haven’t used water clay before, Alicia recommends and is currently using “Sculpture Raku”. WED and Soldate 60 are two water clay bodies often used at the studio. WED is not available at ClayPeople, but you can get it at Douglas & Sturgess. You can order 25 lbs of any water clay for the class available from ClayPeople at cost through Paul.
