Jiajun Lu (JJ)

Instructor: Jiajun Lu (nickname JJ) has an MFA from Musashino Art University in Tokyo, Japan. JJ has numerous public sculptures in the US, Japan, and China. He currently teaches sculpture at Contra Costa College and the Richmond Art Center, and works on private and public commissions at his studio in Richmond. See more about JJ and his sculpture at

Class Description:  The class is ideal for beginning sculptors, but open to all levels, beginner to advanced. We’ll learn to sculpt the portrait (head and neck) in water clay working from the live model and includes some lectures, demos, and one on one instruction. At the first two classes, we’ll sculpt the skull as a structural form (e.g. George Bridgman) (no live model). In the next 6 classes we’ll sculpt the portrait from the live model. The class will be limited to a maximum of 12 students. If there are more than 8 students, two models will be available. Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination is required of all students (the model[s] and instructor are fully vaccinated). Please note: if a covid variant emerges that requires masking including the model, this class will change to focus on the torso rather than the portrait so the model can mask and the class proceed.

Materials: Students are responsible to bring their own water clay, portrait armature, and tools. More details on materials here.

Tuition: non-members $425 (paypal – pay to family/friend, venmo, check), $438 (credit card). Tuition includes instruction and model fees only, students are responsible for materials. Contact to enroll and pay (indicate your payment method: paypal, venmo, credit card, or check, so we can provide details on how to pay), and if you have any questions about the class. All payments are non-refundable unless the workshop is cancelled, and credit card fees from paypal ($13) are not refundable even if the class is cancelled. If you need to drop the class, we may be able to provide a refund if there’s a student from the waiting list to replace you.
